Heritage

Rivers have for centuries provided a key route for human navigation and travel.  Travelling by boat on a river can be a much faster and energy efficient mode of transport than walking.

Major cities are often situated strategically on main rivers, or at the joining of two rivers for navigational and importation means. They provide essential links with inland to coastal locations.  The importance of the rivers both for navigation and trade has today almost ceased due to a combination of siltation, updated methods of transport and competition from better situated ports, however in years gone by they were the highways of the country, today the transport role they provide is mostly for recreational purposes.
