Eco-Warriors work the sands of Filey

Volunteers from Marine Eco-Action spent a sunny Sunday afternoon beach cleaning at Filey. Armed with bright green bags and litter pickers the group swept through a section of the beach retrieving objects such as trainers and peculiar plastics.

After the clean organisers Natalie SquireS and Chris Barrett sorted through the rubbish surveying what was found for the Marine Conservations Society’s Adopt a Beach Scheme; whilst also separating out the rubbish which could be sent for recycling.

Natalie said: “We were really please with the turn out, it’s great that people gave up an hour on a Sunday to help our marine conservation work. We intend to run quarterly beach cleans at Filey so if you couldn’t make this one then please get in touch and we will let you know when the next one is - email marineecoaction@hotmail.co.uk or call 075510270228.”

The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has many supporters groups which work tirelessly across the county; undertaking practical exercises on nature reserves, fundraising for the Trust and running events such as guided walks and family fun days. Marine Eco-Action is the first ‘marine themed’ supporters group and will be supporting the Trust’s marine conservation and education work.

The Trusts Marine Conservation Assistant Anthony Hurd said: “We are so pleased that Chris and Natalie decided to set up this supporters group - we have lots in store to encourage people to enjoy Yorkshires Living Sea and we hope that others will be inspired to join their group.”

Natalie also added: “As an action group we also intend to undertake ‘Shoresearch’ a scheme run by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to build a better picture of what marine species are living where. There is an incredible range of plants and animals found on the shore so if you’re interested in learning more visit the Trust website www.ywt.org.uk for upcoming dates and information or call 01904 659570.”
