Making Living Seas a reality

The Wildlife Trust’s are set to play a key role in the process of establishing Marine Conservation Zone’s (MCZ’s) in the North Sea.

Net Gain, the group tasked with engaging North Sea stakeholders into the MCZ process, has established four Regional Hub Groups (located in the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, Lincolnshire and the East of England) consisting of a range of sea users and conservationists, tasked with creating the North Sea MCZ network of protected sites.

Each local hub group will have a representative from The Wildlife Trust’s acting as a champion for wildlife during this process. It is within these groups that the bulk of the decision making regarding where MCZ’s are to be sited will be made. Staff from the Wildlife Trust’s of Northumberland, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk will all be present to push through our vision for Living Seas, and ensure that marine wildlife stays at the heart of the decision making process.

The Trust’s are also delighted to have been invited a prospective place on the Net Gain Stakeholder Advisory Panel, a representative group of 24 different stakeholders who will help support the Regional Hub Groups in the decision making process. This is both an exciting and challenging time for marine conservation and the Wildlife Trust’s are now well placed to help make Living Seas a reality.
