Velvet Swimming Crab - Necora puber

What is it? A crustacean with vivid red eyes, a velvety shell and a set of specially adapted legs for swimming, their main method of escaping predators.
How big is it? The average size of the shell is 8cm across
What does it eat? These crabs are voracious predators, attacking and eating anything they can, including other crabs! Dead animals and algae also feature in their diet.
Where do they live? Velvet swimming crabs can be found from the shore down to a depth of 70m. They prefer rocky habitats and are often found under stones and boulders, and hiding in crevices.
How can I find them? Look out for velvet swimming crabs whilst exploring the shore. But beware! This species has a ferocious reputation, often rearing up at unsuspecting rockpoolers!
