Grim Findings

The Lincolnshire coast was once an important centre for the production of salt. In the 1950s Grimsby was the largest and busiest fishing port in the world. Salt was used to preserve the fish for travel or consumption when the fish were out of season. The fishing industry once gave the town much of its wealth. Due to the Cod Wars with Iceland the fishing industry declined, however it is still home to the UKs largest fish market.

Legend has it that Grimsby was founded by Grim, A Danish fisherman. The word ‘By’ means ‘village’ and in old Norse ‘city’.
